Long before European colonialism, Kerala was already connected to the world. Greco-Roman, Arab, and later Chinese sources describe this coast as a centre of maritime trade.
Pepper, cardamom, ginger, textiles, and timber travelled from these shores, carried by monsoon winds across the Indian Ocean.
Roman coins found at Muzris and Arab travel accounts speak of a land whose wealth lay in what grew here ; and how it moved beyond. What was born in the mountains was borne by the sea.

Coffee carries a parallel story.
Historical accounts trace its arrival in India to the 17th century, linked to Baba Budan, a Sufi saint who is believed to have carried coffee beans from Yemen -then the heart of the global coffee trade, and planted them in the hills of Chikmangalur.
Whether read as history or enduring legend, coffee took root in Indian highlands, flourished under monsoon shade, and became a culture shaped by patience, craft, and time.
